Yeah that liquid thing was called fluid retarder. It makes acrylics dry slower and work more like oils ina way (makes them blend easier with other colors on canvas). Actually i never used paints before PERIOD till i took a class that my friend was teaching a the college. She prefered acrylics too, so i went wit that but ended up regretting it when they dried way too fast for me. Maybe it was the brand i used, or this is how acrylics are across the board, or i;m just too slow. either or, i want to try some oils now, but i still gott some acrylic left from the class... and a 2'by3' canvas. Any ideas?

i use affordable paints that i am happy with called "basics" by a company called Liquitex. they dont seem to dry as quick as you say.... go to an art store and ask, they are pretty popular. give em a try and let me know.
